For a while now I had been planning to do this, to be frank since I got disqualified at a audition for being a few centimeters shorter than the so called “Height Criteria”. The Frenzy had to come out in a certain way so this is it.
In the world where we keep talking about breaking the stereotypes, Feminism, Equality, empowerment and being confident. How many times every day do we define Beauty. How many times do we make people feel ugly? How do we judge in this world full of Mediocrity?
Beauty- the word is very powerful as it symbolises the appearance of a person. Moreover, it highlights the distinctness of a person. We think Beauty defines Women and Women define Beauty.
So coming back to judging Beauty - Beauty Pageants. Beauty Pageants are basically contests/competitions that are held in various levels that primarily focuses on the physical appearance of a person. They have been around since the early 1900s. Of course things have changed, but the damage that it brings has not.
Beauty pageants are measuring women for their ability to represent their leadership in their communities, but the women who participate are being oversexualized. There is a bathing suit round, in which the women are solely being looked at for their bodies. There are also requirements to be in a beauty pageant: the women must have a talent, have a well-shaped body figure, and a face to represent their people. If beauty pageants wanted to be more real, they would include women's beauty from all spectrums. Why must we define someone is more beautiful than someone else? As humans, how are we capable of judging someone on looks?
These Pageants are teaching young girls to rely on their looks, their body type while on the other side of the spectrum we teach children that – Beauty is on the inside! If a girl enters certain competition and then loses midway, she will go the rest of her time thinking they were not enough. Which then leads to the increase of insecurities and even some mental health problems.
Going back to the influence beauty pageants has on children, little girls now have beauty pageants too. A currently on air show "Toddlers and Tiaras" is starting an early sexualisation of little girls (Watch Hollywood movie- Little Miss Sunshine). There is stress put on by these pageant families who want their little girl to win, and if she does not, then she did not make it. Also there are such competitions happening on School level as well – Nowadays Schools conduct Mr and Miss. “Name of the School”. Children are being raised into a society that is telling them they must appear a certain way to be beautiful. We must be careful about raising the future generations and let them know their appearance is not the only thing that matters.
Recently I came across another article in the newspaper Tag line - What to wear if you are skinny!! Can I not effing wear whatever I like, why are we supposed to be dressing in a certain way because we are Fat/Skinny/fair/dusky/ugly/pretty!!! Why is it a problem if I wear what I am comfortable in and like.
It’s high time we stopped objectifying people, realised and Believed Beauty is on the inside!!
And Yes!! This is coming out of someone who auditioned and was very fond of these Pageants until she understood that The idea is to Believe in Yourself!
